FTUM Sunday Activity ( May 11,2014)

FTUM every Sunday is holding regular meetings with Union Members, conducting
training it’s relation and links with all the Union members and new workers who come to FTUM Training Center at Hlaing Tharyar Townships. And this Sunday May 11th 2014 they held a meeting and the discussion was based on IndustriALL.

From May 2014 3th to 9th May Aliansi Petani Indonesia ( API) hosted this workshop at Bali Indonesia and two representatives from Myanmar Mr. Than Swe (President of AFFM) and Mr. Michel ( Coordinator) attended this workshop.

"Garment strikes in Cambodia's Bavet City continue Monday"
(ျမန္မာ့အလင္း ၂၀၁၄ခုနစ္ ဧျပီလ ၆)

PHNOM PENH, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of garment workers at some 30 factories in two special economic zones in Bavet City of Svay Rieng province continued striking Monday to demand a 50 U. S. dollars bonus, a trade union leader said. "Workers at those factories go on strikes Monday to demand the 50 U.S. dollars bonus pay,"said Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, which is one of the eight opposition-aligned unions that lead the strikes. "They will protest until factories give them the bonus."

Workers at the Manhattan and Tai Seng special economic zones have staged strikes since last week to demand the 50 U.S. dollars that they claimed that factories had promised to give them when they did not join a post-New Year strike, which was organized by the opposition-aligned trade unions in mid-April.

However, the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia ( GMAC) denied that factories had made such promise and accused the opposition-aligned trade unions of fabricating this information after they failed to attract workers for their post-New Year wage demanding strike.

It said during last week's illegal strikes, workers had hurled stones at factories, threatened other workers not to work and destroyed factories' properties. "GMAC envisages that this outlawed action is evolving to violence and will spread to other industrial zones if there are no preventive measures, so we urge the Ministry of Labor and local authorities to curb these illegal strikes immediately in order to ensure security and safety for investors,"GMAC said in a statement late last week.

Heng Sour, spokesman for the Ministry of Labor, could not be reached for comments on Monday.

The garment and footwear industry, the kingdom's largest foreign exchange earner, comprises 960 factories with about 620, 000 workers. The sector earned 5.5 billion U.S. dollars in revenues last year.

Wage dispute in the sector remains hot since pro-opposition trade unions, which represent about 19 percent of the total workers, still demand the government and GMAC to raise the monthly minimum wages to 160 U.S. dollars from the current 100 U.S. dollars.

2014 May Day Celebrations in Yangon, Myanmar

A some Myanmar workers were raising their fists in protest in downtown Yangon on May 1, another group of over 4,000 workers were raising their spirits in Hlaing Thaya’s industrial zone.

Workers, union organizers and leaders, and various official dignitaries gathered together on the Aung Myae Tharyar Football field in Hlaing Thayar Township to celebrate May Day 2014.  This was the second May Day celebration organized by the Federation of Trade Unions Myanmar (FTUM) in Yangon since the passing of the country’s Organization of Labour Law in 2011.

The spirited crowd of white t-shirt-wearing industrial workers and FTUM organizers was joined by U Aung Min Union Minister of the President Office, U Htin Aung Deputy Minister for the Labour, Employment and Social Security Department, Shigeru Nakajima director of the ITUC Myanmar office, Daw Swe Zin Htike Secretary of Myanmar Motion Picture Organization Foreign Affairs, Sectary Mr. Hla Shwe of Myanmar Consumers Union (MCU) and ILO Liaison officer Mr. Steve Marshall.

As distinguished guests sat under the same shaded canopy as some of the thousands of other workers and union leaders present, FTUM General Secretary, U Maung Maung gave his opening remarks about the importance of working in solidarity and the need for cooperative and productive relations between workers, employers and government officials. Basic unions and union leaders are needed to help achieve real policy change within the country. The importance of understanding laws, forming more unions and increasing membership were also mentioned as key factors that can contribute to enjoying benefits, achieving worker’s aims and creating change. Those celebrating together were also reminded that International Worker’s day originated from the united struggle for an 8-hour working day and decent working conditions, (some of the same issues Myanmar’s working class is grappling with today).

In recent years, a number of reforms and policy changes have had major effects on employment relations as well as trade union activities and rights within the country.

Within the past year alone the number of FTUM unions has increased from 100 to 385 and the number of basic unions within the country is still growing. Regardless, there remain numerous problems facing worker relations within both formal and informal economic sectors and workers are still denied basic rights within many labour fields. As Steve Marshal mentioned during his own address, there are changes happening within the country, however some feel that these changes aren’t happening fast enough. Nonetheless, despite the many struggles which Myanmar’s working class still face, the gathering in Hlaing Thaya on May 1, as Marshal pointed out, also marked an opportunity to take stalk of the changes that have occurred over the past few years as well a chance to offer thanks for all the work which has been done.

The importance of the countries workforce regarding Myanmar’s economic development, Gender Equality, the need for female union leaders, consumer rights, social dialogue, and decent work were some of the other topics mentioned during various speeches delivered throughout the morning.

Song and dance performances where also given by various union members in addition to the Hlaing Thaya Kayin don dance troupe and a short play was produced by the students who have been attending English classes at FTUM’s training center in Hlaing Thayar. Furthermore, dancers and musicians from Kayan township entertained a cheering crowed with their Elephant Dance and performance stunts.

During the late afternoon, those present at the May Day event were given the chance to enjoy performances by popular singers Eain Chit, Linn Nit, Mi Mi Keh, and Linn Linn. As the crowd happily joined in to sing along to some of their favorite pop songs, it lead one to hope that if we are collectively able to raise our voices in celebration, as well as in protest, then we may also aspire to continue to raise more voices in solidarity for the continued improvement of the lives and working conditions of Myanmar’s people.

Sri WULANDARI (Regional Education Officer) from BWI, Asain Pacific Director AOLINAR TOLENTINO from BWI, MARLON QUESADA from sask (Trade Union Solidarity Centre of Finland) in Head Office of FTUM. They was proceed about Brief Review of Wood/Forest sector, Problem Identification & Analysis of Unions, Ways of problem solving , Future Plans and Gender & Age Issues.A total (24) members of FTUM was participated from 24 Unions  in this meeting.

 On (19-20)th April, 2014 FTUM Consultative Meeting at Chantar Gyi Hall in HlaingThaYar Township. U Than Swe President of AFFM, U Than Lwin Vice President of FTUM , U Maung Maung General Secretary of FTUM, Mr.Noriyuki Suzuki General Secretary of ITUC-AP, Mr. Steve Benedict HTUR Director of ITUC, Mr. Shigeru Nakajima Director of ITUC (Myanmar Office) gave the opening and welcome speech. In this meeting, they are discussed openly about the due of FTUM members, the draft of May Day Ceremony plans, the draft Constitutions of Federation Trade Unions Myanmar (FTUM) for Second Congress, the future plans of FTUM, Activities of FTUM committees. A total number of 116 representatives of Unions attended the Meeting which included audiences from the factories and 377 Unions.

"Tortured' Indonesian maid returns to Hong Kong"

An Indonesian maid allegedly tortured by her Hong Kong employer returned to the city on Monday for a medical examination to help the investigation of a case which sparked angry protests.

Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, 23, was whisked through the airport surrounded by a dozen police officers, as several activists shouted "Justice for Erwiana!"

The Indonesian consulate said she would undergo a full medical examination during her visit lasting about a week and stay in accommodation provided by Indonesian authorities.

"We will provide full assistance to Erwiana. It is the duty of the consulate of her own country," said Sam Aryadi, vice consul for public affairs.

Sulistyaningsih was reportedly abused over a period of eight months while working in Hong Kong and was in critical condition on her return to Indonesia in January.

One of her doctors there said at the time the mistreatment included having her head smashed repeatedly against a wall.

The case sparked renewed concern, including from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, about the treatment of domestic helpers in Hong Kong.

Thousands of them took to the streets in January to demand justice for Sulistyaningsih.

Her former employer, 44-year-old Law Wan-tung, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Sulistyaningsih.

Law was also charged with common assault and four counts of criminal intimidation -- charges related either to Sulistyaningsih or to her two previous Indonesian domestic helpers.

The Asian financial hub is home to nearly 300,000 maids, mainly from Indonesia and the Philippines, and criticism from rights groups over their treatment is growing.

Last September a Hong Kong couple were jailed for savagely assaulting their Indonesian domestic helper, including burning her with an iron and hitting her with a bicycle chain.

Amnesty International in November condemned the "slavery-like" conditions faced by thousands of Indonesian domestic helpers in Hong Kong and accused authorities of "inexcusable" inaction.
